Types of Video Production Companies

Full-service video production companies

Full-service video production companies manage the project from the brief through final delivery. That can include concept development, scriptwriting, casting, locations, filming and editing. Ask which of those tasks the proposal includes. A single point of contact helps when that person can make decisions and keep the whole production moving.

Corporate video production companies

A corporate video production company creates content for customers, employees, investors and other business audiences. Projects can include company profiles, leadership interviews, recruitment videos, customer stories and training. For an interview project, watch a complete interview rather than judge the company by its commercial reel. Listen for clear answers, clean sound and an edit that holds together.

Commercial and advertising production companies

Commercial production companies create video for advertising campaigns. The work can involve creative treatments, actors, sets, product demonstrations and several versions for different placements. Tell the producer where the ad will run before asking for a quote. A campaign that needs vertical edits and alternate openings should be planned for those versions before filming.

Animation studios

Animation studios build videos using illustrations, characters, motion graphics or 3D assets. They suit projects that need to explain something difficult to film, such as a software workflow or an internal product process. Ask for a complete video in the style you need. Check whether the explanation makes sense before being impressed by the movement.

Documentary and brand story studios

These studios build stories around real people, interviews and recorded activity. They can suit founder stories, customer experiences and films about an organization’s purpose. Watch how the story develops over the full video. Attractive footage helps, but the interviews and edit still need to give the viewer a reason to care.

Event and social video teams

Event teams capture activity that happens on a fixed date. Social video teams create content for particular platforms and viewing habits. Your project may need both. Specify whether you need full presentations, a highlight film, interviews or short vertical edits. Those deliverables require different coverage, even when they come from the same event.

How to Choose a Video Production Company

Start with location and the kind of shoot. A commercial with a full crew, a lighting package, and a location favors a company in a production hub with the gear and the people on hand. An interview series or an event needs a dependable crew more than a big soundstage. Match the company’s core work to yours. A B2B animation company and a cinematic commercial house are both video production, and they are built for different briefs.

Then check three things. Look at a recent reel, not the highlight from five years ago. Ask who is on the crew for your specific shoot, since some companies subcontract. And get the budget model in writing, whether that is a day rate or a per-video price, so the quote and the invoice match.

Questions to Ask Before You Hire

After more than 15 years producing videos, we advise settling the production details before a crew is booked. A quote becomes useful when you can connect the price to the work and the finished videos you will receive.

  1. What finished videos are included? Confirm the main video, running time, shorter edits, screen formats, captions and any language versions. A main film and five cutdowns should appear as separate deliverables.
  2. Who develops the concept and script? Establish what your team must supply and what the production company will create. Ask who approves the script before filming.
  3. How many revision rounds are included? Confirm the allowance at each stage and what counts as a change to the approved direction. Reworking a script after filming can involve more than editing.
  4. Who owns the finished video, raw footage and project files? Have the agreement address each separately. Ask about handover charges and any licensed assets that cannot be transferred.
  5. What is the schedule from kickoff to delivery? Ask for script approval, filming, first cut, revision and final delivery dates. Leave time for the people in your company who need to approve the work.
  6. Who will work on our project? Confirm the producer, director, camera crew, sound team and editor. Ask which roles are subcontracted and who is responsible for their work.
  7. What permissions and licences are included? Confirm who handles music, stock footage, performers and locations. Explain where the finished video will run so the permissions cover its intended use.
  8. How will you capture footage for social versions? Discuss vertical framing, alternate openings and captions before filming. A horizontal master does not automatically provide every shot a vertical edit needs.
  9. What could increase the quoted price? Ask about overtime, extra shoot days, travel, reshoots and additional revisions. Agree on how changes are priced and approved.
  10. How will you handle feedback and file delivery? Name the decision-maker, agree on a review process and confirm which files you receive. Ask how long the company retains footage and project files.

Red Flags When Hiring a Video Production Company

  • A price without a defined scope. Look for the crew, shoot days, editing and finished versions included. If one quote includes social edits and another does not, you are comparing different jobs.
  • A portfolio without clear production credits. Ask what the company handled on the example you like. Filming, editing, animation and complete production are different contributions.
  • No named person responsible for delivery. You should know who manages the schedule, communicates changes and resolves problems. Ask who steps in when that person is unavailable.
  • A deadline that ignores approvals. A schedule needs time for your team to review the script and edits. If delivery depends on immediate feedback, that expectation should be agreed at the start.
  • Unclear ownership or usage terms. Resolve access to footage, project files and licensed assets before signing. Ask what happens if another editor needs to make changes next year.

How Much Does a Video Production Company Cost?

Most professional business videos cost between $4,300 and $32,500 per project. The ranges in our video production cost guide give you a starting point for planning.

Type of videoTypical project range
Corporate video$4,500 to $22,700
Commercial or ad$8,800 to $53,700
Testimonial$2,300 to $13,300
Training video$2,900 to $12,200
Event highlight video$2,400 to $9,700
Full event coverage$3,200 to $16,400
Social media video$1,000 to $6,000 per video

A finished-minute rate does not establish the cost of live-action production. A 60-second video can require several locations and shoot days. Ask for a project quote that identifies the filming and finished versions. Compare the same deliverables before comparing prices.

How Long Does Video Production Take?

Allow time for planning, production, editing and approvals. These published schedules provide starting points for different scopes. Your producer should confirm the schedule for your brief.

TypeTypical timeline
Corporate video4 to 6 weeks, depending on filming and deliverables
1 to 2 minute animated corporate video4 to 6 weeks of production work, plus any approval delays
Commercial campaignApproximately 7 to 12 weeks from concept development through delivery
10 to 30 second motion graphics package1 to 3 weeks for our published short-form package

The examples reflect schedules described by Mammothic Films, Creamy Animation and Feel Right Inc.. The short-form schedule applies to our published package.

Give the producer your launch date before the scope is finalized. Also identify who approves the script and edit at that point. A filming date is only one part of the schedule. The project still needs decisions and consolidated feedback to reach final delivery.

How We Built This List

We started with Clutch’s video production listings in October 2026, excluding sponsored and featured placements from the selection process. We used US locations, client reviews and each company’s own website to assess the companies included. This is not a paid placement.

The list brings together companies with different specialties. Choose by the work you need, where filming will happen and the team’s relevant experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are thousands, from one-person operations to national studios. This list includes live-action production companies, animation studios and post-production specialists with stated US locations.

It ranges widely. A short single-location shoot can run a few thousand dollars, while a national commercial with a full crew and talent runs into five or six figures. Companies price either by the day, meaning crew and gear per day plus edit, or per finished video. Ask which model a company uses before comparing quotes.

A production company shoots and edits the video. An agency plans the campaign and strategy around it, and may hire a production company to shoot. Some companies do both. Check which side of that line a company sits on for your project.

Los Angeles and New York are the largest. Atlanta, Chicago, Austin, and Miami all have deep crew bases and active studios. The companies in this guide are listed individually rather than grouped by city.

Check that the video sits on the company’s own website, YouTube or Vimeo channel. Ask what the company handled on the project. A company may have supplied filming, editing or animation rather than the whole production.

Not always. Many companies travel for shoots, and some run national productions from one base. Local helps for a fast turnaround or repeat work. For a one-off, the right crew matters more than the zip code.

Many can, and it is worth asking upfront. Shooting with the social versions in mind changes framing and length, so it is better decided before the shoot than after.

Your goal for the video, where it will run, the rough length, the shoot location, your timeline, and your budget range. The more of that a company has, the closer the first quote will be to the final one.

We do, mainly in Washington State and the Pacific Northwest, and on cross-border projects that need production on both sides of the Canada line.

The Bottom Line

This list includes live-action production companies, animation studios and post-production specialists with stated US locations. Pick by where your shoot is and what kind of video it is, look at recent work, and confirm the crew and the budget model before you sign. For projects in the Pacific Northwest or across the Canada border, that is the work our own team handles.
